July 25, 2002, WASHINGTON—President Bush has appointed two new members to the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP), the White House has announced. The appointees will serve four-year terms on ACHP, which was established to ensure that the Federal Government incorporates historic preservation into its programs and projects.

The President appointed Susan Schanlaber of Aurora, Illinois, to serve as a historic preservation expert. She succeeds James K. Huhta of Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Emily Summers of Dallas, Texas, appointed as a public representative, succeeds Katherine Slick of Las Vegas, New Mexico.

Susan Schanlaber

Susan Schanlaber is the president and CEO of The Landmark Group of Companies, headquartered in an Aurora, Illinois, landmark firehouse. She is founder and owner of the company, which specializes in the acquisition, renovation, and management of its multi-million dollar portfolio of Chicago-area historic properties. She currently represents Illinois on the Board of Advisors of the National Trust for Historic Preservation in Washington, DC.

Ms. Schanlaber serves on the Chicago Advisory Board of The Trust for Public Land and the Board of the Landmarks Preservation Council of Illinois in Chicago. Having worked on the finance committees of several local, State, and Federal elected officials, she continues, as she has since 1986, on the Congressional finance committee of Speaker of the House J. Dennis Hastert (R-IL).

Emily Summers

Emily Summers is the principal of Emily Summers Design in Dallas, Texas. She is a member of the American Institute of Architects, the American Architecture Foundation, and the American Society of Interior Designers, and is registered as an interior designer in the State of Texas. She currently serves on the Foundation Advisory Council of the University of Texas at Austin School of Architecture.

As part of her 34-year affiliation with the Dallas Museum of Art, Ms. Summers is on the Artists Awards Committee and the Marketing Committee, Building Committee, Education Committee, and Associate Committee. She is also a founding committee member of the Dallas Architectural Forum.

About ACHP

The Advisory Council on Historic Preservation is an independent Federal agency that provides a forum for influencing Federal activities, programs, and policies as they affect historic resources. It is the only entity with the legal responsibility to balance historic preservation concerns with Federal project requirements.

ACHP:

  • advocates full consideration of historic values in Federal decisionmaking;

  • reviews Federal programs and policies to promote effectiveness, coordination, and consistency with national preservation policies; and

  • recommends administrative and legislative improvements for protecting our Nation's heritage with due recognition of other national needs and priorities.

ACHP membership includes four historic preservation experts, four citizen members, a Native Hawaiian member, a governor, and a mayor, all appointed by the President. The President also designates four Federal agency heads to terms on ACHP. Currently, these include the Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, the Administrator of the General Services Administration, the Secretary of Defense, and the Secretary of Transportation.

The Secretaries of the Interior and Agriculture, the Architect of the Capitol, the chairman of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and the president of the National Conference of State Historic Preservation Officers complete the ACHP membership.

ACHP is headquartered Washington, DC, with an office in Denver, Colorado.
