Choices

Submission Guidelines

Nature of Submissions

Choices requires electronic submissions via e-mail. Four types of submissions are sought:

  • proposals for thematic groupings of papers,
  • papers for possible publication in Choices, and
  • papers being submitted in association with an accepted thematic grouping
  • papers for Policy Issues monthly articles on timely policy topics

Submitting an Item

Please prepare your submission according to the guidelines listed below.

Topic Proposals

Choices is the outreach vehicle of the Agricultural & Applied Economics Association and is designed to provide current coverage regarding economic implications of food, farm, resource, or rural community issues directed toward a broad audience. To enhance outreach effectiveness, Choices publishes thematic-oriented groupings of papers. The broad themes we will repeatedly visit in Choices are:

  • agriculture and trade,
  • resources and the environment,
  • consumers and markets,
  • agribusiness and finance, and
  • rural economics.

Submissions are invited relevant to these themes and on other possible themes. Before submitting, please review our guidelines for the material required in a thematic proposal. Thematic proposals will be reviewed with the most important criteria being that the proposal covers an outreach-worthy topic, showcases agricultural economics work, and is directed toward the largely US-based Choices target audience. For more information about how we consider these proposals, please see our referee guidelines for theme proposals.

Papers

Choices encourages submissions of papers that are not associated with theme groupings. Such papers should provide current coverage regarding economic implications of food, farm, resource, or rural community issues directed toward a broad audience. Please review our submitted paper guidelines before submitting. Papers will be reviewed with the most important criteria being that the paper covers an outreach-worthy topic, is directed toward the largely US-based Choices target audience, showcases agricultural economics work, and is written in a style that communicates to noneconomists — that is, free of mathematics and technical graphical economics. Papers will be considered on the basis of our review guidelines.

Papers in Theme Groupings

Once a theme grouping is accepted then papers under that theme may be submitted, provided they have been approved by the Choices editorial staff and those proposing the theme. Unsolicited papers for themes are not accepted. Theme papers will be reviewed according to our theme paper review guidelines.

Policy Issues Papers

Papers should focus on timely topical analysis of current issues. These short three to five page, peer-reviewed monthly postings will provide background and brief analysis that should be of interest to those involved in the policy dialogue.

Timing

Submissions may occur any time. Reviewed and accepted Choices material is compiled into quarterly issues and annual volumes. Policy Issues will be posted monthly and then archived for access by topic. Subscribers and AAEA members are notified of new material by email.
