Construction Productivity gets a boost

Construction often lags other sectors in annual productivity gains. NIST researchers are working to change this trend by developing new technologies and standards that allow products made by different companies to work together. Many of these technologies involve improving automation, such as tracking construction supplies through bar coding and using live wireless data from field sites to better manage projects. NIST works with industry consortia to research and disseminate productivity-enhancing techniques.

For better tracking of amorphous materials, NIST created a laser scanner system that calculates how much sand or gravel has been removed from a stockpile.
