RAILROAD SAFETY
Home | Site Index | NHTSA Homepage

Railroad tracks, trestles, bridges, yards, and equipment are private property and trespassers are subject to arrest and fines.

Young children are often fascinated with trains. Unfortunately, a desire to “short-cut” across the tracks, rather than use a public crossing, can often lead children to walk or play on or near railroad tracks, where they risk serious injuries or even death.

Tragically, over the past ten years, more than 844 children under the age of 16 were killed and nearly 2864 children were injured at railroad crossings and on railroad property.

Children must be taught that they should NEVER “short-cut” across railroad tracks, even if it looks like there is no train coming. Also, children need to understand that railroad tracks are hazardous places and should be taught how to recognize the dangers at or near rail/highway grade crossings.
