1/2/09 -- For those lucky young readers who suddenly find themselves with a shiny new bookstore gift card, here are some suggestions for what to read next: The Miami Herald's Best Kids' Books of the Year. This year, we found an abundance of gems both in the tweens-and-teens novel category and in nonfiction for young readers. Curiously, even most of the picture books we liked the best were fact-based biographies. read more

Do kids need vitamin supplements?
1/2/09 -- Researchers looked at 10,136 children from birth to 18. Overall, one third of kids were taking supplements, the majority taking a multivitamin. Supplement use was higher in kids with higher family income and smoke-free environment. Bottom Line: Despite the billions spent, there's no scientific evidence that supplements can make you healthier or live longer. read more

The Brave Kids Story


Brave Kids was founded on June 9, 1999, by Kristen Fitzgerald , after the loss of her two children to catastrophic illnesses. Our mission is to help children with chronic, life-threatening illnesses and disabilities by connecting them to desperately needed health services and resources such as financial assistance, camps, support groups, child care, dental assistance, transportation and physical therapy.

The Brave Kids program has been approved by and is linked to over 110 health organizations such as: The National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners, The National Brain Tumor Foundation, the National Pediatric AIDS Foundation, United Cerebral Palsy, and the National Children's Cancer Society. read more

Dalai Lama and Kristen Fitzgerald of Brave Kids His Holiness the Dalai Lama honored Brave Kids Founder and President, Kristen Fitzgerald for her compassionate work helping children with special needs at a special Unsung Heroes of Compassion presentation.

Kristen received a special acknowledgement for her work with Brave Kids from His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
