There are currently a number of different certification processes that focus on different aspects or sectors of production (for example, fair trade, sustainable forest management and organic agriculture). These processes have developed more or less independently and have both overlapping and distinct sets of criteria. While this allows for structures that are better adapted to the needs of certain producers and consumers, it may also increase cost and effort for some producers and create confusion among consumers. The Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy will explore the overlap among issues of fair trade, sustainable forest use and sustainable agriculture in a test project in three coffee-producing regions of Mexico that are adjacent to forests. A team made up of local coffee producers, forestry conservation experts and fair trade experts will design the overall project. The project will provide coffee producers who are farming in ways that maximize forest habitat and soil conservation access to specialized fair trade channels so that they receive higher, stable prices in exchange for conservation activities. Special marketing promotion in the United States and Canada will test overall consumer reaction to this approach.
