Integrated agricultural development for indigenous families in the Lacandona rain forest

Integrated agricultural development for indigenous families in the Lacandona rain forest

Mexico

Received C$ 48650 in 1997

The Lacandona rain forest is recognized nationally and internationally for its high biodiversity and its role in maintaining climatic and ecological balance. Since the middle of this century, the forest has been under pressure as a result of migration from other parts of Mexico and resource extraction. Improved agricultural techniques and access to higher priced markets will reduce the need to clear more areas of forest. 150 families will receive training and support to combine agricultural self-sufficiency with the production of organic coffee. Biological pest control methods will also be developed.
