Developing Regional Standards for Forest Management

Canada

Received C$ 90000 in 1997

Interest in forest certification is growing in Canada and various groups have pooled resources to develop standards under the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Principles and Criteria. There is a need, however, to operate in a more coherent manner in order to develop consistent standards in all regions across North America. This project will strengthen the FSC forest certification system in Canada and contribute to a strong FSC presence in North America by supporting the work of regional standards development processes; sharing information within Canada and with the US and Mexico; and making information on certified forests and forest products available to the public. A credible, inclusive and consistent process to develop standards for forest management, and a well informed retail sector and public will create the market incentives to move forest managers along an environmental and socially responsible path.
