IFOAM is a voting member organization of the IUCN. The organizations
have worked together on a broad range of issues, jointly organizing
conferences and publishing literature on the benefits of organic
agriculture.
Recently, IFOAM and IUCN jointly launched a website focusing on organic
agriculture and biodiversity. The website addresses the benefits of
organic agriculture for wildlife, enhancing biodiversity and
beautifying landscapes, and details the joint work programs of IFOAM
and IUCN on organic agriculture and biodiveristy issues.
IFOAM also lobbies support for organic agriculture through
participation in the IUCN as a voting member organization. At the IUCN
World Congress, IFOAM brought forth a resolution requesting that the
IUCN that was approved resoundingly, requiring IUCN to assess the
threats of GMOs to biodiversity. IFOAM also supported the successful
motion calling for a moratorium on GMOs. Furthermore, IFOAM applauded
the defeat of the ecoagriculture motion. The ecogagriculture
intiatiative is an attempt to hijack the good name of organic
agriculture for the benefit of multinational corporations and the
biotechnology industry. This was the only motion out of 120 at the IUCN
World Congress to be defeated.
IFOAM's work with the IUCN is integral to the recgonition of the role organic agriculture plays in nature conservation.
