CEC requests response from Mexico to Los Remedios National Park Submission

Montreal, 23/04/2007 – On 20 April 2007, the Secretariat of the Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC) issued a determination requesting a response from Mexico to submission SEM-06-006 (Los Remedios National Park), filed with the Secretariat on 9 November 2006, by Asociación Fuerza Unida Emiliano Zapata en Pro de las Áreas Verdes (the “Submitter”). The Submitter alleges that Mexico is failing to effectively enforce its environmental law with respect to the protected natural area known as Los Remedios National Park in Naucalpan, in the state of Mexico.

On 19 January 2007, the Secretariat determined that the submission did not satisfy all requirements of Article 14 of North American Agreement on Environmental Cooperation. On 2 March 2007, the Secretariat received a revised submission in which the Submitter asserts that Mexico is failing to oversee the protection of the Park, the management of which is the responsibility of the government of the State of Mexico under an agreement with the federal government.

Mexico has up to 60 days to provide its response. Thereafter, the Secretariat will review the submission in light of Mexico’s response to determine whether it warrants development of a factual record.
