Invitation to JPAC session on trade and conservation in North America

Montreal, 6/10/2006 – The challenges and opportunities for conservation in the context of free trade in North America is the central focus of a public workshop and regular session of the Commission for Environmental Cooperation’s Joint Public Advisory Committee (JPAC), to be held in Cancún on 7–8 November 2006.

Mexico’s environment minister, José Luis Luege Tamargo, will deliver a keynote address to open the workshop, and top conservation experts from all three North American countries will lead the discussion of issues, including migratory species, land conservation, invasive species, and biodiversity conservation in an era of increasing trade and economic linkages.

The meeting’s outcome will support JPAC in its role of providing advice and recommendations to the CEC Council, composed of the top environmental officials from Canada, Mexico and the United States. JPAC’s fourth regular session for 2006 will follow the workshop.

Non-profit organizations and individuals may request limited financial assistance to attend the workshop and regular session by pre-registering for the event. A request to receive financial assistance is limited to one person per organization, and must be received by 13 October 2006.

The registration form and provisional agenda for this session can be found at <www.cec.org/calendar>.
