Update: Maize and biodiversity report

Montreal, 10/06/2004 – The Secretariat of the Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC) today updated the work plan for the release of its independent report on Maize and Biodiversity: The Effects of Transgenic Maize in Mexico.

The Secretariat notes the following:

  1. The previous work plan states the report would be ready by late June 2004.
  2. A final draft of the report, including recommendations from the Maize and Biodiversity Advisory Group, was submitted to the CEC Council—the environment ministers of Canada, Mexico and the United States—on 14 May 2004.
  3. The governments have since indicated that additional time is needed to review this final draft.
  4. The Secretariat expects to receive comments on the final draft from the governments by early July.
  5. After consideration of these comments, a final report will be submitted to the Council.
  6. Council will then decide whether to make the report publicly available.
