CEC's environment fund issues continent-wide call for proposals

Montreal, 8/01/2003 – The Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC) of North America today issued a call for grant proposals for community-based projects that focus on environmental monitoring and assessment related to human health.

Under the North American Fund for Environmental Cooperation (NAFEC), the CEC supports grassroots environmental work with grants up to US$25,000 / C$40,000 / M$250,000. Since the fund was established in 1995, it has issued 178 grants totaling US$6.28 million.

This year's projects should strengthen the capacity of citizens to monitor aspects of their environment that affect their health, and lead to increased community participation in resolving environmental problems. Monitoring approaches should incorporate local, traditional and scientific knowledge, and link human and ecosystem health.

Grant proposals must be received by NAFEC prior to 31 March 2003. An application form, a list of previous grants and the NAFEC funding guidelines may be found on the CEC web site at Grants for Environmental Cooperation.

The CEC was established by the governments of Canada, Mexico and the United States to address regional environmental concerns, help prevent potential trade and environmental conflicts, and promote the effective enforcement of environmental law.
