JPAC calls for comments on the work plan issue related to the implementation and further elaboration of NAAEC Articles 14 and 15

Montreal, 12/03/2002 – The Joint Public Advisory Committee (JPAC) of the Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC) of North America is requesting public input on the requirement for the Secretariat to provide the Parties with its work plans and the opportunity to comment on them.

This decision was made by Council on 16 November 2001 in relation to five factual records referred to in Council Resolutions 01-08 to 01-12.

In accordance with CEC Council Resolution 00-09, JPAC would like to receive written comments from the public on this issue. Based on the public comments, JPAC will discuss the potential advice to be provided to Council in advance of the June Council Session.

We invite the public to consult the CEC web site at <http://www.cec.org> under the Citizen Submissions on Enforcement Matters pages and in particular the JPAC page for the following documents:

Please submit comments no later than 30 April 2002 to Manon Pepin, JPAC Liaison Officer, by e-mail at <mpepin@ccemtl.org>, by fax at (514) 350-4314 or by mail at the address below. Include your name, firm or organization, address, telephone and fax numbers, as well as e-mail address. Comments received will be posted on the CEC web site (unless otherwise directed by the submitter) in their original language.

The CEC was established by Canada, Mexico and the United States to build cooperation among the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) partners in implementing NAAEC, the environmental side accord to NAFTA. The CEC addresses environmental issues of continental concern, with particular attention to the environmental challenges and opportunities presented by continent-wide free trade.

JPAC is a 15-member, independent, volunteer body that provides advice and public input to Council on any matter within the scope of NAAEC.
