Montreal, 17/04/1998 – Dear Sir/Madam:
The Council of the Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC) will
be holding its 1998 regular session on 25-26 June 1998 in Mérida, Yucatan, Mexico. The
Session will be an opportunity for the Council to review the work of the CEC and to
discuss priorities for 1999 and beyond.
The CEC is an international organization whose members are Canada,
Mexico and the United States. The CEC was created under the North American Agreement on
Environmental Cooperation (NAAEC) to address regional environmental concerns, help prevent
potential trade and environmental conflicts and to promote the effective enforcement of
environmental law. The NAAEC complements the environmental provisions established in the
North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
The Council is the governing body of the CEC and is composed of the
highest-level environmental authorities from each of the three countries. Its members are
the Canadian Environmental Minister, Ms. Christine Stewart, the Mexican Secretary of
Environment, Natural Resources and Fisheries, Ms. Julia Carabias, and the United States
Environmental Protection Agency Administrator, Ms. Carol M. Browner.
The Joint Public Advisory Committee (JPAC) of the CEC will also be
holding a regular session on 24 June 1998. The JPAC is composed of fifteen citizens, five
from each of the three countries, and advises the Council on any matter within the scope
of the NAAEC.
You are cordially invited to attend the public portion of the above
sessions. We will be contacting you again soon to provide you with the agenda, program of
activities and registration form. The information will also be available on CEC's
HomePage under the rubric "What's New at the CEC." In the meantime,
we invite you to block these dates on your agenda and to share copies of this notice.
We hope to see you in Mérida. Until then, should you require any
additional information, please contact Ms. Malika Elhadj at the address noted below.
Yours truly,
Janine Ferretti
