Montreal, 22/06/1999 – The Council of the Commission for Environmental
Cooperation (CEC) today announced the appointment of Ms. Janine Ferretti to a three-year
term as the new Executive Director of the Secretariat of the CEC.
The CEC was created under the North American Agreement on Environmental Cooperation and
its Council is composed of Canadian Environment Minister Christine S. Stewart, Mexican
Secretary for the Environment, Natural Resources, and Fisheries, Julia Carabias, and US
Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Carol M. Browner.
As Executive Director of the CEC Secretariat, Ms. Ferretti will manage a staff of 30,
headquartered in Montreal. She will lead the Secretariat as the Commission faces the
challenge of addressing important North American environmental issues in the context of
increasing economic and trade links between Canada, Mexico and the United States.
Ms. Ferretti has worked for the CEC since 1994, holding the position of Interim
Executive Director since 1998. Prior to that, she served as Executive Director for the
Pollution Probe in Toronto, Canada. Ms. Ferretti has also worked as research associate for
the Environmental Liaison Centre International in Nairobi, Kenya, and the Environmental
Law Centre for the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources in
Bonn, Germany. She holds a Masters degree in environmental studies from York University in
Toronto, Canada and is fluent in English, Spanish, French, and German.
The appointment of Ms. Ferretti follows an extensive candidate search. In naming Ms.
Ferretti, Council members expressed their satisfaction and confidence in her work. The
decision reflects the Council's interest in providing leadership, continuity and
stability within the organization as it continues its work to conserve, protect and
improve the environment in North America.
The Commission for Environmental Cooperation is an international organization mandated
to address North American regional environmental concerns, help prevent potential trade
and environmental conflicts, and promote effective enforcement of environmental law. The
CEC mission underscores the importance of public participation to foster conservation of
the North American environment. |
