| Montreal, 6/06/2000 – The Council of the North American Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC) will convene in Dallas, Texas, for its two-day annual session, beginning on Monday, 12 June 2000.
The Montreal-based CEC was established under the NAFTA environmental side accord to build cooperation among the three NAFTA partners--Canada, Mexico and the United States--in protecting the environment of North America.
Its governing body, the CEC Council, meets at least once a year to review and direct the program activities of the Commission and to receive public input and advice from the Joint Public Advisory Committee (JPAC) and various stakeholders.
For this session, Carol M. Browner, Administrator of the United States Environmental Protection Agency, hosts her counterparts, David Anderson, Canadian Minister of Environment, and Julia Carabias, Mexico's Minister of Environment, Natural Resources and Fisheries.
Issues under discussion will include follow-up to last month's Children's Health and the Environment Symposium, held in Toronto, and the sustainable coffee workshop that took place in Oaxaca in March, as well as consideration of a proposed North American Regional Action Plan (NARAP) on mercury, among other items.
There will also be a regular session of the Joint Public Advisory Committee (JPAC) on 11 and 13 June. The agenda of the JPAC session includes a workshop on Citizen Participation in Enforcement Activities, a plenary session on Critical and Emerging Trends in North America, and briefing on issues related to Citizen Submissions on Enforcement Matters.
