Radiocast: Fighting Childhood Obesity
Debra: This is Healthcare 411: Information for better health. About 17
percent of U.S. kids and teens are obese. AHRQ research shows weight management
programs, such as those offered by some schools or health care centers, can
help. But becoming healthier takes commitment. AHRQ Director Dr. Carolyn Clancy
explains:
Dr. Clancy: There is no clear-cut solution that works for everyone, but
it does help to have the whole family adopt healthy habits early to reduce the
risks of any member becoming obese. All parents should continue to encourage
their kids to adopt healthy habits such as getting daily exercise and eating a
healthy diet. Be a good example to them. It’s one of the greatest preventive
health gifts you can give to your family.
Debra: Order a free DVD from AHRQ available online at
ahrq.gov/child/dvdobesity.htm. Healthcare 411 is produced by AHRQ, the
Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, part of the U.S. Department of
Health and Human Services. I’m Debra James for Healthcare 411.
