Radiocast: Play it Safe with Children and
Medicine
Debra: This is Healthcare 411: Information for better health. It’s no
secret that many kids get sick during the cold and flu season. While many
over-the-counter remedies may help them feel better, parents need to consider
all of their child’s medications, including prescriptions, and how they might
interact. AHRQ Director Dr. Carolyn Clancy offers advice:
Dr. Clancy: The most important message for parents is to be involved in
your child’s health care. Children pose pretty special challenges in terms of
medication. Particularly those who are very young or very sick, can’t always
tell you what they’re feeling and at the same time they’re the ones who are
least able to tolerate medication errors. Pharmacists are a terrific resource.
Debra: For more safety information, check out AHRQ’s free brochure, "20
Tips to Help Prevent Medical Errors in Children," available online at
ahrq.gov/consumer.
Healthcare 411 is produced by AHRQ, the Agency for Healthcare Research and
Quality, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. I’m Debra
James for Healthcare 411.
