Building Capacities on Certification of Organic Agriculture in the Pacific
The project “Building Capacities on Certification of Organic Agriculture in the Pacific” was an IFAD-funded project, implemented by IFOAM, in cooperation with ICEA. The project, focusing on Organic Agriculture Certification, was a first step in IFAD’s long-term involvement in Organic Farming in the Pacific. The project ran from 2006 to 2008.

The project aimed at:

  • Analyzing the existing situation of Organic Agriculture and Fair Trade productions in the Pacific Islands Countries.
  • Enabling producers of organic agriculture to obtain the certification of their products at a reduced and affordable cost.
  • Institutionalizing certification capacity either private or governmental.
  • Developing a set of regional standards for Organic Agriculture products.
A series of workshops and trainings was conducted in the Pacific region under this project. Active participation and contribution from local governments was key in the successful implementation of the project.
