Current Projects

  • Effects of altering diet composition on caloric intake and cardiovascular risk as assessed by measuring blood pressure, insulin, glucose, plasma lipoproteins, inflammatory markers, body weight and body composition.
  • Development of optimal diet and exercise programs to optimize body weight and risk of heart disease, stroke, and dementia, in the elderly, including the use of web-based programs in the free-living state.
  • Determination of the effects of nutritional factors, especially types of fats and carbohydrates, as well as hormones, niacin, and inhibition of cholesterol synthesis on gene expression of genes affecting lipid metabolism and on human lipoprotein metabolism.
  • To develop better lipid, lipoprotein, and inflammatory biochemical and genetic markers of heart disease, stroke, and dementia risk in the elderly population.
