Approved Chemist Program
The Approved Chemist Program recognizes the highly skilled participant in the Laboratory Proficiency Program. Successful applicants must have achieved a high level of accuracy in the measurement of a number of parameters on every sample in a proficiency series. The AOCS Examination Board annually awards Approved Chemist status to applicants whose results are complete and where statistical analysis reveals a low aggregate deviation from the consensus value for each analyte. Approved Chemists may be employed by independent or industrial laboratories and their certification may allow them to become referees for commodity trading.

To qualify for Approved Chemist, applicants must:
• Work in an independent or industrial laboratory
• Be an AOCS member in good standing
• Establish analytical competency through the Laboratory Proficiency Program

The AOCS Examination Board determines the statistical criteria listed below:
• A combined score of less than 1.4 or less than 1.3 with one outlier in the Laboratory Proficiency Program
• Absolutely no missing samples or required results

Certification is based on performance during the previous LPP year. If the criteria are met, the chemist is approved in the specific area(s) of analysis from August 1-July 31. All Approved Chemists are listed in the AOCS Directory, inform, the Official Methods and Recommended Practices of the AOCS, and the AOCS website.
