St. Paul mayor to seek reelection

St. Paul mayor to seek re-election Eds: APNewsNow.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman says he's running for re-election this year.

The first-term mayor is promising progress on issues such as education and public safety in Minnesota's capital city, despite a state budget deficit.

Coleman says state cuts to cities and counties have gone too far. He says the cuts are now at the level where they will "significantly impact our ability to deliver." Coleman, a former City Council member, re-entered politics in 2005 and defeated incumbent Mayor Randy Kelly, a fellow Democrat.

Coleman is mentioned as a possible candidate for governor next year. But he says he remains focused on serving St. Paul, and would not confirm or deny plans for seeking higher office.

Posted by citizen on Jan 7 2009 10:39PM - Until I hear a public apology from Chris Coleman and until I see a serious investigation into the hundreds of people who were illegally arrested and the dozens of people who were illegally pepper-sprayed, I can not forgive Chris Coleman for the tragic loss of citizens' freedoms during the Republican National Convention. By his blanket approval of the dangerous actions of sheriff Bob Fletcher and by his agreement of the intimidation tactics used on peaceful protesters, the St Paul mayor has proven that he does not deserve any public office in a democracy. If he cannot rectify the wrongs of that infamous Siege of St Paul in September, he should resign. He should not be re-elected.
