Bottineau Girls basketball team is DOMINANT!! That was soooo awesome when they won 3 consecutive times. Their best player Shaunna Knife should be returning so they should win again I say. I was cheering for them the last two yrs at the Dome in Minot. That is an unbelievable expierience!! Who agrees!!!!?

Only, an only if they recruit another athlete from the Turtle Mountain School. Their last two State Tournament MVP's are former players from Belcourt and played for Turtle Mountain Community High School, Manadi Keplin and Shauna Knife. They also got Cheslie Peltier and they are working hard on Sasha Goluis(9). Isn't recruiting against the rules in high school basketball.

Maybe, idk, but they are still amazing! Kelsey Peltier and Shaunna Knife will both average close to 20 pts next yr I bet. They have great futures ahead of them. Aren't division 1 schools looking at "The Knife" already?

I agree with Barkley.  They seem to come up with new players from different schools every year.  Thought recruiting was illegal in Class B schools.

More than a decade ago, I watched the Bottineau coach bring a new level of teaching to the women's basketball program, including meditation, out-of-season training and plays taught at the NCAA level. He shaped a rock solid program that's been consistently good for 10 years. Don't call out an MVP as a "recruit" because you're sucking on sour grapes — people know about the solid base of the program and choose to move to Bottineau to be a part of it. This is what North Dakota is all about: Years of hard, honest work in hopes that you'll eventually reap some rewards.

Thank you Jane! I wish I could be a part of that wonderful program, but I am by the Garrison area and I live on a farm so I am stuck here. I enjoy watching them though!

First of all, let me start out by saying that Bottineau has developed a great basketball program. I think that the head coach had done a terrific job on developing their confidence and skills. BUT, I agree with some of the other comments that Bottineau does thrive off of Belcourt/Dunseith players. It is hard to say that Bottineau would have won a championship without Mandy Keplin or Sheana Knife. Both were not recruited and moved for different reasons. I know, because I am from Belcourt. Mandy moved to Bottineau because the coaches at the time did not play her enough. She didn't even start (should have). So it was in the best interest for her to move. Shauna moved because her coaches at the time did not protect her from other individuals on the team. Some of the girls on the team were very jealous of her and made her feel unwelcomed on the team. In one occation, during WDA regionals, a parent WENT INTO HER HOTEL ROOM and *****ed Shauna out for some odd reason. The coaches did nothing, the school did nothing. The following year Shauna moved to Bottineau. I heard that another reason she moved to Bottineau is because the varsity and JV coach were dating there own players. The following year the school removed them from there positions as coach but they still remain as teachers for the TMCHS because their parents reside on the school board. Shauna's parents felt that their daughter was not safe and decided to move her. I know some of the coaches that are currently coaching for Belcourt. They stated that Shauna's parents would have kept her in Belcourt if they knew that Belcourt was getting new coaches. As for Kelsey Peltier, she just jumped on the band wagon at the time and would probably be getting her but kicked in Dunseith.

But Bottineau does do it's share of recruiting. I know that Kelsey Peltiers dad (Danny Peltier) tries to  recruit players for Bottineau. I know this because I know Danny personally. He is constantly trying to get Sasha Golus to go to Bottineau. I know this because we know Sasha's parents very well. I know that Mandy Keplin tries to recruit her first cousin Julia Davis(whom is a great player for Belcourt) to go to Bottineau. I know that Danny tries to get other girls that are pretty good in Dunseith to transfer to Bottineau. I know this because I'm good friend with the head coach in Dunseith.

The major question is "does Bottineau's head coach know about this". In  my opinion the answer is yes. The reason why is that when I was in high school Bottineau's head coach used to coach Newburg boys. I used to travel with his summer team. He offered me to come and live with him and play for Newburg. I declined the offer. I think they ended up taking a good place in state.

Mandan Braves does the same thing. But don't get me started on the type of things they do with our kids to get them interested in moving. From personal calls to congradulate them on good camps, to offering their parents jobs, to giving our kids nice hugs when they see them during games(like any of these coaches give a **** about young indian girls), to inviting certain girls to go to wisconsin to play basketball with them. Three of the starters for there 5th grade team are from Belcourt. I know this because I see it and hear about it from the parents. I know they would totally deny it if it came down too it because the parents and kids can get in trouble for it too.

So yes, they do it and thrive off of it. Kids and parents get very tickled that these coaches take interest in our kids. Maybe our casino should start offering college scholarship to girls to move to Belcourt and play.  Maybe Belcourt would start getting state championships and girls would be interested in moving to a good basketball program after taking a few titles. Belcourt, the best team that money could buy.

I also forgot to mention that even though Bottineau probably didn't recruit Shauna Knife they were trying. Danny Peltier has tried to persuate Shauna in the past to attend Bottineau school.

Also, if Bottineau was not trying to recruit Shauna, then how did she manage to slip the 180 day rule(which is called the Shauna Knife rule in the state), but that is another long story. The rule states that Shauna must live in the district 180 days in order for her to be eligable to play basketball the following year.

So that means that her parents must live in Bottineau school district at least 5-6 months before the season starts. How did they do this? I will tell you how.

Shauna's mom works in the the Belcourt School system and still does. She is a very good teacher. Shauna transfered right away to Bottineau after her season ended in Belcourt.

Her family has to live in the district for 180 days. Were did they stay if they had not purchased a home in the area? They stayed in the MSU-Bottineau Dorms. Bottineau College let them stay in the dorms.

Now, what college in north dakota lets a random family from out of town stay in the dorms. Let alone an Indian family. I will tell you, NONE. So the notion that Bottineau were not trying to recruit Shauna is far fetched.

If I'm not mistaken, Shauna's mom is the residence hall supervisor at the collge?  That's why they get to stay there, its part of the job.  That's not to say they weren't urged to attend Bottineau, but as far as moving into the school district, it is legit.  I don't think there is a 5 or 6 month waiting period either.   People flock to winning programs, they want to be a part of it, who wouldn't?  Mike Forsberg does not recruit these kids, I can assure you of that.

Catholic schools recruit all the time I understand, don't they have the same guidlines?if not why?
Posted On: Aug 20 2008 5:02PM

The only reason why they are winning is because they don't play any competition.  If they played in a real game they'd get their butts wiped out the back door.  These girls need to learn how to play.  They are terrible.  Whoever thinks they could win a state tourny is sadly mistaken.

They'll lose all their games from here on out because they have no heart and no 3 point shots!

Wow, no competition? I think one could make an argument that Bottineau has played in one of the toughest regions in the state over the last three years with Minot Ryan, Kenmare and Velva all being very very good teams.  Plus, Bottineau always schedules games against teams from out of the area like Dickinson Trinity (consitently good), Parshall( state team they destroyed), Hatton-Northwood, Midway-Minto, etc.  I have a feeling you don't know what your talking about, so I thought I'd educate you a little bit.  I'm not even steamed, just sitting here laughing at the comment.  How can a team that won three straight tournaments against the best each area of the state has to offer, be accused of not playing anybody worthy?

Sounds like a slap in the face to the rest of the state to me.

Posted On: Aug 27 2008 9:45AM

You guys sound like they are the greatest thing since Ham Radios.

All I'm saying is, if they are so good why not take them down to Fargo and Bismarck for some games against those city kids.  I have a feeling they'd get their butts kicked back home.

hey, at least they got a chance to go to the city.

p.s.

I'd hardly compare Velva and Parshall noteworthy competition.  Thats like saying a kid catching 20 touchdowns in highschool football is the best reciever NOT in the NFL.

geez, you guys need to get out of the hicktowns and look at some real bball.

Aaaaah, the almighty Class A....your right, they would probably lose to Class A...thanks for bringing that argument to the forefront, I had no idea.  It's pointless to argue...hope you have fun at your state tournament, after all, it doesn't take much to get there....4th place at regionals!!! That's a state worthy team right there.....talk about not playing any competition.
