Professional Educator's Common Interest Group (CIG)

The purpose of CIG will be to provide a venue for those involved in university education and industrial training in lipids and oils to promote teaching excellence in lipid science and oil technology through discussion and exchange of ideas. This concept developed after discussion among AOCS members involved in university teaching as a potentially valuable means of promoting student learning and the quality of graduates entering the industry.

The first planning meeting took place at the 99th AOCS Annual Meeting & Expo in Seattle, Washington, USA. The meeting saw a good turnout with lots of dialog about ways to further our goal of promoting teaching excellence in lipid science through discussion and exchange of ideas.

The three main goals that evolved from our discussion in Seattle were:

  • Collecting and posting course syllabi, perquisites, and book selections for lipid courses
  • Developing a resource page on the AOCS website that will include public access resources (including websites) commonly referred to by students
  • Creating a global database of lipid and food science programs
