December 4, 2008 - U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) Mike Leavitt and his counterpart from the People's Republic of China, the Honorable Chen Zhu, M.D., today renewed for another five years the framework document that governs work on health between the two nations.

The Protocol on Cooperation in the Science and Technology of Medicine and Public Health, originally signed in 1979, and amended and extended every five years since, governs all U.S.-Chinese collaboration on public health, biomedical research, medicine, and regulatory work in product safety. The Protocol falls under the umbrella of the United States-China Agreement on Cooperation in Science and Technology, one of the key, bilateral accords concluded when the two countries re-established diplomatic relations 30 years ago.

Secretary Leavitt and Minister Chen signed the renewed Protocol while Secretary Leavitt was in Beijing this week for the fifth session under the United States-China Strategic Economic Dialogue.
