American Solar Energy Society is the nonprofit that's been leading
the renewable energy revolution for more than 50 years

Established in 1954, the American Solar Energy Society (ASES) is the nonprofit organization dedicated to increasing the use of solar energy, energy efficiency, and other sustainable technologies in the U.S.

ASES leads national efforts to promote solar energy education, public outreach, and advocacy. ASES publishes the award-winning SOLAR TODAY magazine, organizes and presents the ASES National Solar Conference, and leads the ASES National Solar Tour – the largest solar energy event in the world, as well as other powerful programs. ASES is now supported by more than 12,000 members across the nation (energy professionals and grassroots supporters) who work together to help create a sustainable energy economy.

Industry – By the Numbers:

  • $972 billion in revenue from renewable energy & energy efficiency industries in U.S. (ASES 2006)
  • $150 billion in tax revenue generated in U.S. (federal, state, local) by renewable energy & energy efficiency industries (ASES 2006)
  • 8.5 million jobs from renewable energy & energy efficiency industries in U.S. (ASES 2006)
  • 259 megawatt photovoltaic market in U.S. in 2007; estimated to grow to 1,590 megawatts by 2010; was only 17 megawatts in 2000 (Prometheus Institute for Sustainable Development)

Helpful Information:

  • Solar Energy – energy that comes from the sun that can be used to generate electricity, heat water, heat a building, etc
  • Photovoltaic (PV) Cells – convert sunlight directly into electricity
  • Net Metering – allows PV customers to sell excess electricity back into the grid
  • Concentrating Solar Power – uses mirrors to focus the sun’s energy into high-temperature heat which is used to generate electricity in a steam generator
  • Solar Thermal – uses the sun’s rays to heat water
  • Daylighting – using sunlight to illuminate a building
  • Passive Solar – using sunlight to generate heat, often for heating a building
  • Wind Power – using wind to move a turbine to generate electricity
  • Biofuels – using recently living organisms like corn, soybean, and other plants to derive energy, often used to fuel vehicles
