reprint permissions
permission to replrint AIAApublications (including excerpts)
introduction
AIAA receives frequent requests to reprint papers or excerpts from papers (e.g., figures) to which it holds copyright. If you are seeking such approval, please read the information given here, and follow the necessary steps so that we may expedite our reply.

First…
Determine whether or not AIAA is, in fact, the copyright owner of the material. The most likely places to find this information are the following:
  • For AIAA meeting papers, journal papers, or individual chapters in multi-authored books, look at the bottom of the first full-text page (not the cover page). There should be a footnote indicating who holds copyright.

  • For single-author books, look at the copyright statement on the back of the title page.
If the statement reads "copyright by the author" … or by a company … or, in the case of government-sponsored work, "no copyright asserted in the United States," then AIAA does not hold copyright, and you must seek reprinting permission from the copyright owner.

If AIAA does hold copyright, however, please read on for further instructions.

Submitting Your Request
Submit your request to:
    Heather Brennan
    AIAA
1801 Alexander Bell Drive, Suite 500
    Reston, VA 20191-4344
    Fax: 703/264-7551
    E-mail: heatherb@aiaa.org
Whether submitted by mail, fax, or e-mail, your request must include all of the following:
  • A cover letter stating precisely what you want to reprint (e.g., Figures 3 and 7) and giving the details of the source document (paper title, authors, paper number, journal issue, pages, etc.). Also state where the material will be republished (e.g., book title, publisher, expected publication date). State whether the intended re-publication is commercial, educational, etc.

  • A copy of the first page of the source document (the page bearing the copyright statement discussed above).

  • A copy of the entire paper, if it is to be reprinted in its entirety.

  • Copies of pages containing excerpts (e.g., figures), if only segments will be reprinted.
Our Response
We will then respond in writing, granting you formal permission to reprint (in the majority of cases), provided that you have included all of the documentation requested above. There may be a small fee involved, unless the author wants to reprint portions of his/her own original work. There will be a requirement, in all cases, to give appropriate credit to the original source.

Failure to obtain permission before reprinting any material is a violation of the copyright laws of the United States.

Questions regarding the above policies may be directed to Heather Brennan.
