Author Susan Weidman Schneider, editor-in-chief of Lilith, discussed her experiences of more than two decades at the helm of this award-winning Jewish women’s magazine. The event, which was sponsored by the Hebraic Section of the Library’s African and Middle Eastern Division, was held at on Tuesday, March 30,at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C.

Founded in 1976, Lilith broke new ground in its coverage of Jewish women’s issues. In her lecture, Schneider discussed the ways in which coverage of these issues has changed since the journal debuted.

Schneider is the author of Jewish and Female (Simon and Schuster, 1985), Intermarriage: The Challenge of Living with Differences between Christians and Jews (Free Press, 1989) and Head and Heart: A Woman’s Guide to Financial Independence (Trilogy Books, 1991). A revised edition of Jewish and Female is soon to be published.

For her work on Lilith, Schneider was awarded a Polakoff Lifetime Achievement Award in journalism. She has also been honored by Hadassah with the Golden Wreath Award and the Eleanor Roosevelt Prize by the American Jewish Congress (AJC). The AJC and the Israel Women’s Network honored her in the Knesset, together with Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg, as one of a select group of Jewish Women Who Have Made a Difference.
