Mission Statement

The mission of the NEPS laboratory is to identify and characterize age-related physiological and pathological changes in skeletal muscle and related body tissues, and to develop interventions that will promote successful aging. We strive to be a leader in relevant and timely research that integrates approaches from the molecular to the whole body level. Our goal through this research is to educate others and to apply our findings to influence public health and policy.

We are committed to conducting meaningful, ethical research in nutrition and exercise, and selected pathological conditions, to fulfill the needs and expectations of the scientific and medical communities; public health organizations; the public at large; and our study volunteers and students. All members of the NEPS Lab collaborate in our joint effort to:

  • Generate novel hypotheses
  • Develop innovative and appropriate research methods
  • Properly collect, manage, analyze, and interpret data
  • Collaborate with other scientists and institutions
  • Disseminate results through written and oral scientific presentations
  • Translate results from the laboratory to the community
  • Participate in policy and planning initiatives from the local to the global level
  • Educate, comfort, and support study volunteers
  • Train future scientists and leaders

We work together and openly share ideas, using a multidisciplinary research and educational approach. The NEPS laboratory responsibly balances research plans and resources while maintaining excellence and integrity in a supportive and respectful environment. We bring together the diversity and the quality of our resources to promote healthy aging and prevent or alleviate the burden of disease. We strive to help people age with strength, vitality, and dignity.
