Lab Laser Safety Officer Writes Book, Wins Education Award

Ken Barat is passionate about safety. As the Lab’s laser safety officer, Barat evaluates laser set-ups, monitors controls, and provides user training. Still, he wanted to do more, so he wrote a book, Laser Safety: Tools and Training, that provides practical, hands-on guidance for laser users. For his many safety outreach efforts, the Laser Institute of America recently awarded Barat the 2009 R. James Rockwell Jr. Educational Achievement Award. More>

Confirmation Hearing Concludes on Energy Nomination of Lab Director Steve Chu

Senators on the Energy and Natural Resources Committee concluded a two-hour hearing on the nomination of Berkeley Lab director Steve Chu as the next Secretary of Energy. His hearing was marked by repeated praise for his exemplary scientific background and his accomplishments at the Lab. In his opening statement, Chu reiterated President-elect Obama’s commitment to renewable energy resources, called for aggressive efforts to increase energy efficiency, and urged the development of technologies to safely use coal and nuclear power.
