Since the new Medicare prescription drug program began on January 1 2006, pharmacists across the United States have filled millions of prescriptions for people with Medicare. Additionally, over the course of the first week of Part D implementation, CMS has taken a number of steps and made a number of adjustments to help facilitate this transition to the new Medicare Drug Benefit. Some of these steps include: improving the real time enrollment and eligibility look-up tool used by pharmacists; working with plans to increase the capacity of plan help lines to provide direct plan-to-pharmacist technical support; streamlining the data submission and reporting procedures from plans to CMS; increasing toll-free pharmacy support phone lines at CMS; and communicating with the pharmacy community.
