Energy and Environment Directorate
Researchers in PNNL's Energy and Environment Directorate work in partnership with academia, other national laboratories, government agencies and industry to deliver science and technology to help the nation and the world solve their most complex energy and environmental challenges. In many cases, these challenges are inextricably linked, with aspects that affect energy management, environmental impacts and economic security.
We draw upon our scientific capabilities and multidisciplinary expertise to research, develop and deploy solutions in these areas:
- Clean fossil energy
- Electric infrastructure
- Energy efficiency and renewable energy
- Nuclear energy
- Nuclear regulatory
- Legacy waste
- Ecosystem health
- Sustainable environmental systems
In addition to focusing on clients' immediate needs, our researchers are helping lead the nation in achieving these long-term goals:
- Mutually sustainable natural resources, energy and economy
- An understanding of how humans impact the environment and climate and effective mitigation of those impacts
- An economy driven primarily by clean, domestic resources and processes
