Past Program Activities, 2003–2008
North Carolina, 2003–2008
From March 2003–February 2008, North Carolina
received funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to
promote coordinated school health, promote sun safety, provide HIV
prevention education, support partnerships and collaboration around helping
youth remain abstinent, and conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS).For information on

Past Program Activities
Promoted Coordinated School Health with an Emphasis on Physical Activity, Nutrition, and Tobacco
Use Prevention (PANT)
- Provided regional training on nutrition and tobacco use prevention
for all school districts that will emphasize primary prevention and
compliance with local policies.
- Provided leadership to the state advisory task force related to the
development of the child and family team initiative, which
placed teams of school nurses, social workers, and community mental
health professionals in schools that have identified needs.
- Maintained the “Leadership Assembly,” which brought together local
superintendents and local health directors to discuss coordinated school
health.
Provided HIV
Prevention Education
- Continued to conduct regional workshops to
bring diverse stakeholders together to form partnerships to address
HIV prevention.
- Maintained a statewide cadre of trainers in coordinated school
health programs, comprehensive school health education, and HIV/STD and
teen pregnancy prevention.
- Provided regional trainings on HIV, STD, and teen
pregnancy prevention, including an update on the revised Healthful
Living Standard Course of Study.
- Assessed the effectiveness and appropriateness of new curriculum
for youth in high-risk situations.
Conducted the Youth Risk Behavior Survey
- Collected data that are representative of youth in grades 6−8 and
9−12 across the state through a collaborative effort between the state
Department of Public Instruction and Department of Health.
- Distributed information collected from the YRBS to statewide
agencies, members of the school health advisory councils, district
staff, and community-based organizations.
- Placed YRBS survey results and marketing information on the Healthy
Schools Web site.
