Past Program Activities, 2003–2008
Milwaukee, Wisconsin — 2003–2008

From March 2003–February 2008, Milwaukee Public Schools in Wisconsin received funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to provide HIV prevention education and conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS).

Past Program Activities

Provided HIV Prevention Education

  • Provided staff development in targeted middle schools and high schools to improve educators’ skills and knowledge in classroom instruction and assessment to prevent HIV infection among youth.
     
  • Reviewed and developing strategies and guidelines for implementation of a revised HIV Prevention Policy throughout Milwaukee Public Schools.
     
  • Increased the capacity of secondary schools to provide culturally sensitive instruction on HIV prevention to high-risk youth and youth with disabilities.

Conducted the Youth Risk Behavior Survey

  • Compiled and analyzed trend data from the YRBS to use as one indicator for reviewing and revising interventions and action plans in the Greater Milwaukee area.
     
  • Collaborated with the University of Wisconsin’s Center for Urban Initiatives & Research to disseminate the results of the YRBS.
     
  • Used the YRBS results in planning and improving programs and policies that address the health risk behaviors of Milwaukee’s youth.
