Past Program Activities, 2003–2008

Maryland — 2003–2008
From March 2003–February 2008, the
Baltimore City Public School System (BCPSS) in Maryland received funding
from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to develop and implement
an asthma prevention program, provide HIV prevention education, and conduct
the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS).For information on Baltimore's

Past Program Activities
Addressed Asthma
- Provided the opportunity for schools to apply for funding to
conduct school-based activities that raise overall awareness of asthma
and increase the participation of all members of the school community in
asthma prevention activities.
- Supported school-based asthma management activities that focus on
recognizing the importance of knowing the signs of asthma attacks,
decreasing exposure to environmental smoke, and taking personal
responsibility for making the lives of asthmatic children better.
Provided HIV
Prevention Education
- Developed and implemented a series of HIV/AIDS prevention lessons
for elementary, middle, and high school students that can be used by
teachers and health educators in every school.
- Developed and delivered professional development on HIV prevention
for administrators, teachers, central office staff,
school police, school nurses, and other school staff, including
custodians and food service workers.
- Provided the skills-based Positive Voices! Positive Choices
HIV/AIDS Prevention Education Program to students in middle schools and
high schools and at community-based organizations serving youth,
faith-based organizations, and institutions of higher education.
Conducted the Youth Risk Behavior Survey
- Used YRBS data to develop, review, and revise curricula and
programs to respond to the identified needs of the students of BCPSS.
- Used YRBS data to guide the development of curriculum, the
selection of classroom support materials, and the establishment of
ancillary programs provided through community partnerships.
