Past Program Activities, 2003–2008
Miami-Dade County, Florida — 2003–2008

From March 2003–February 2008, Miami-Dade County Public Schools in Florida received funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to provide HIV prevention education and conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS).

Past Program Activities

Provided HIV Prevention Education

  • Conducted trainings to update teachers and school staff on the district’s HIV/AIDS curriculum and policies.
     
  • Supported Peer Education Clubs in the majority of high schools in the county.
     
  • Collaborated with community-based organizations to plan and deliver events on HIV prevention for youth during major HIV prevention initiatives, such as Black AIDS Awareness Day, Latino AIDS Awareness Day, Miami-Dade County HIV/AIDS Awareness Week, and World AIDS Day.

Conducted the Youth Risk Behavior Survey

  • Collected data on youth risk behaviors that are representative of Miami-Dade County students in grades 9–12.
     
  • Created a YRBS District Statistical Manual that uses graphs to depict youth risk behaviors in the county across time.
     
  • Distributed the YRBS District Statistical Manual to all school administrators, school decision makers, and relevant community organizations across the district.
