Past Program Activities, 2003–2008
Los Angeles, California — 2003–2008
From March 2003–February 2008, the
Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) in California received funding
from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to develop and implement
an asthma prevention program, provide HIV prevention education, and conduct
the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS).For information on Los Angeles'

Past Program Activities
Addressed Asthma
- Disseminated information about LAUSD’s asthma program and policies
to staff, parents, and community members.
- Facilitated access for students with asthma to the Breathmobile
program, a cooperative partnership with the Asthma and Allergy
Foundation of America and the Los Angeles Department of Health.
- Identified asthma-related topics and speakers for inclusion in the
annual LAUSD Coordinated School Health Conference.
Provided HIV
Prevention Education
- Conducted trainings for teachers and other school staff on the
district’s HIV/AIDS curriculum and policies.
- Provided programs and support to help schools prevent HIV
infection, especially among those students who are at high risk,
including students with special needs, sexual minority students, and
students of color.
- Promoted the use of the LAUSD HIV program Web site, which provides
access for
teachers to lesson plans and current resource links, as well as
information for parents and students.
Conducted the Youth Risk Behavior Survey
- Collected data on youth risk behaviors that are representative of Los
Angeles students in grades 9–12.
- Disseminated the YRBS results to school administrators, school
decision makers, and relevant community organizations across the
district.
