Past Program Activities, 2003–2008
Louisiana, 2003–2008

From March 2003–February 2008, Louisiana received funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to provide HIV prevention education, support partnerships and collaboration around helping youth remain abstinent, and conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS).

Past Program Activities

Provided HIV Prevention Education

  • Sponsored Louisiana’s Annual HIV/AIDS Program Conference.
     
  • Collaborated with key stakeholders involved in HIV prevention across the state to strengthen partnerships and enhance HIV prevention program planning.
     
  • Implemented strategies to address the needs of subpopulations disproportionately affected by HIV infection, especially communities of color.
     
  • Conducted regional professional development and curriculum trainings for teachers and staff who serve youth in alternative schools, youth correctional facilities, homeless youth shelters, and other high-risk situations.

Conducted the Youth Risk Behavior Survey

  • Worked with the Louisiana Office of Public Health to coordinate youth surveys in order to improve data quality and reduce the survey burden on schools
     
  • Conducted a promotional campaign for school principals, local education agency superintendents, and health coordinators in each school district in the state on the importance of the YRBS survey and the data it provides.
