District of Columbia Public
Schools, 2003–2008
From March 2003–February 2008, the District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS)
received funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to
provide HIV prevention education and conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey
(YRBS).For information on District of Columbia's

Past Program Activities
Provided HIV
Prevention Education
- Provided support for health and physical education teachers and
other school personnel to integrate instructional strategies to prevent
HIV infection among students in grades 6 −12 in compliance the goals and performance standards
of the school district.
- Collaborated with the DCPS Office of Academic Services, Leadership
Network and the Council of Chief State School Officers Health Education
Assessment Project to coordinate the introduction of a standards-based
supplemental curriculum on HIV.
- Collaborated with the Health and Physical Education Curriculum
Content Director to conduct staff in-service sessions in selected
secondary schools, featuring strategies to incorporate content on
preventing HIV/STD and
unintended pregnancy into standards-based classroom
instruction using adopted health and physical education curriculum
frameworks.
Conducted the Youth Risk Behavior Survey
- Published and distributed a YRBS results report that includes
information on trends in risk behaviors over time.
- Published YRBS results online and distributed a slide presentation
for use by community-based organizations.
- Encouraged local organizations and agencies to conduct secondary
analyses of local data and monitor the various uses and users of local
YRBS data.
