Healthy KidsThe Houston Independent School District receives funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to implement an asthma management program, provide HIV prevention education, and conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS). The Clearing the Air about Asthma in Schools Project will provide tools and resources designed to improve the quality of life for the highest risk children and their families. The HIV prevention education program is designed to strengthen HIV prevention through curriculum implementation, professional development, and collaborative partnerships.

Houston's Program In Action

Asthma Management

  • Assessing health insurance coverage among students diagnosed with asthma.
     
  • Providing guidance in selecting a primary care provider for those students diagnosed with asthma in an effort to provide continuity of care and education based on best practices.
     
  • Improving self-management skills among students with asthma, by providing asthma education to students and parents on identifying and avoiding asthma triggers.

Providing HIV Prevention Education

  • Designing and implementing effective professional development on HIV prevention education in schools.
     
  • Strengthening HIV prevention education through curriculum development, implementation, monitoring, and effective evaluation.
     
  • Maintaining internal and external partnerships that support HIV prevention education in schools.

Conducting the Youth Risk Behavior Survey

  • Administering the YRBS to collect data on youth risk behaviors that are representative of Houston students in grades 9-12.
     
  • Using YRBS data to identify training needs for classroom teachers, guide curriculum revisions, and target student-centered activities.
     
  • Using YRBS results to determine program initiatives, establish needs when requesting grant funds, and recommend supplemental instructional resource materials.
