DIGITAL OCEAN

Sea Grant funded and produced detailed bathymetric maps for the Gulf of Mexico that gave oil and gas producers highly detailed information on where to lay pipelines and locate platforms. Revenues from these commercial sales pay for smaller maps for use in schools.

The Issue: Although much research has been done in our oceans, they are still considered an unknown world. For example, so far technology does not allow for quick and easy fish stock assessments, and the Digital Ocean Project aims to improve test population models for fisheries. Furthermore, improving technology to prepare for extreme events, such as hurricanes, would improve the forecasting abilities. The Digital Ocean Project will improve the monitoring of such extreme events.

Sea Grant: The mission of Sea Grant’s Digital Ocean is to build on work pioneered by Sea Grant to develop methods for creating digital representations, or models, of ocean resources and phenomena. By gathering, analyzing and making data widely available, we can help provide essential tools for ensuring the health and sustainability of our marine resources and economy.
