Chemical and Pathogenic Contaminant Exposure: Potential Health Effects of Arsenic in New England Ground Water

Drinking water is an exposure pathway for chronic adverse health effects due to arsenic toxicity in some parts of the world. In other areas the link is not as clear for many reasons particularly because arsenic concentrations in drinking water are quite low and health effects seem to vary among populations. Recently the USEPA lowered the drinking water standard for arsenic in the United States; however, research on the human-health effects of long-term exposure to small amounts of arsenic is ongoing by many health experts.

U.S. Geological Survey scientists in collaboration with public health experts are investigating potential links between arsenic in drinking water and incidence of cancers in targeted parts of New England.
