Healthy KidsThe American Samoa Department of Education receives funding from CDC's Division of Adolescent and School Health to provide HIV prevention education and conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS). The goal of the American Samoa Department of Education's HIV prevention program is to promote healthful living and discourage the behaviors that put young people at risk for HIV, other STDs, and unintended pregnancy..

American Samoa's Program In Action

Providing HIV Prevention Education

  • Conducting professional development for classroom teachers and school administrators on HIV prevention education curricula and teaching strategies.
     
  • Disseminating information to all public and private schools to increase the awareness of HIV/AIDS.
     
  • Providing technical assistance and resources to assist high schools in planning and implementing effective HIV, other STDs, and unintended pregnancy prevention programs.

Conducting the Youth Risk Behavior Survey

  • Administering the YRBS to collect data that are representative of American Samoa students in grades 9−12.
     
  • Disseminating the results of the YRBS to schools, school leadership, and community partners.
     
  • Using YRBS results to identify and improve programs, policies, services, and resources for addressing HIV prevention education for young people.
