Past Program Activities, 2003–2008 South Dakota,
2003–2008
From March 2003–February 2008, South Dakota received funding from CDC’s Division of
Adolescent and School Health to promote coordinated school health, provide
HIV prevention education, and conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS).For information on

Past Program Activities
Promoted Coordinated School Health with an Emphasis on Physical Activity, Nutrition, and Tobacco
Use Prevention (PANT)
- Implemented a training on how to develop school health councils and
sponsored ongoing training for previously established school health
councils.
- Developed, maintained, and promoted the South Dakota Schools Walk
Program with assistance from the state Parent-Teacher Association; the
state Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance;
school health councils; school board associations; school
administrators; and others.
- Developed and implemented a standards and assessment training and
follow-up course using the Health Education Assessment Project
materials.
Provided HIV
Prevention Education
- Partnered with the Oglala Sioux Tribe on HIV/AIDS
prevention education activities.
- Collaborated with the Department of Education’s Indian Education
Director to market HIV training events and resources.
- Contracted with Straight Forward to provide youth-led parent
sessions on sexuality education and HIV/STD prevention.
Conducted the Youth Risk Behavior Survey
- Marketed and distributed the YRBS results.
- Partnered with key stakeholders to highlight YRBS data for South
Dakota.
