Past Program Activities, 2003–2008
Vermont, 2003–2008

From March 2003–February 2008, the Vermont Department of Education received funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent & School to promote coordinated school health, provide HIV prevention education, and conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS).

For information on Vermont's current program activities, see Vermont.

Past Program Activities

Promoted Coordinated School Health with an Emphasis on Physical Activity, Nutrition, and Tobacco Use Prevention (PANT)

  • Collaborated with other state agencies to plan and implement district-level initiatives, including creating a statewide healthy school award and providing funding to districts to develop a wellness policy.

  • Provided training and technical assistance to schools on using the School Health Index.

  • Implemented an evaluation of a 3-year coordinated school health leadership training.

Provided HIV Prevention Education

  • Expanded opportunities for schools to learn about HIV prevention, including integrating HIV prevention into all trainings.

  • Addressed youth at high risk for HIV infection by providing training for educators in alternative school settings, correctional facilities, and community-based alternative programs.

  • Provided professional development to school and district staff on HIV/STD prevention curriculum and tools to assess the curriculum, including foundational content, standards-based practices, and the development of performance evaluation items.

Conducted the Youth Risk Behavior Survey

  • Collected data on youth risk behaviors that are representative of students across the state in grades 9-12.

  • Targeted youth at high risk for HIV, including out-of-school youth and students in residential programs and alternative schools during the YRBS administration.

  • Disseminated the results of the YRBS to relevant state partners, school districts, and health agencies.
