2003–2008
From March 2003–February 2008, the
Virginia Department of Education received funding from CDC’s Division of
Adolescent and School Health to provide HIV prevention education and support
partnerships and collaboration around helping youth remain abstinent.For information on

Past Program Activities
Provided HIV
Prevention Education
- Coordinated regular meetings of the Collaborative HIV/STD,
Abstinence, Teenage Pregnancy Prevention, and Sexual Health team to
share activities, trainings, and initiatives; maintained an HIV
prevention resource guide; and provided information for youth returning
to public schools from detention or correction facilities.
- Conducted trainings consistent with the identified needs of local
school districts regarding Family Life Education, HIV, and other STDs; a
Health for Success conference; and a regional train-the-trainer
workshop to educate Family Life Education teachers who can train
colleagues in their schools.
- Worked to ensure that local school districts are in compliance with
the Code of Virginia related to HIV/AIDS and the Model
Guidelines for School Attendance of Children Who Are Infected with HIV.
- Provided information and technical assistance to local school
districts on updating and/or revising their curricula.
