Healthy AdolescentsThe San Diego Unified School District in California receives funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to implement an asthma management program, provide HIV prevention education, and conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS). The Asthma Management Program’s goal is to help schools reduce asthma episodes and asthma-related absences. The goal of the HIV/AIDS Prevention Program is to prevent HIV infection by providing information and resources to students, parents, and employees.

San Diego's Program In Action

  • Identifying and developing asthma education resources and training for coaches, physical education teachers, and before and after school staff.

  • Providing orientation and training to school nurses and health assistants on the delivery of home visiting services, including asthma case management services.

Providing HIV Prevention Education

  • Developing a resource guide and Training of Trainers workshop with follow-up support to assist educators in creating safe schools for sexual minority youth.

  • Creating a district-wide HIV prevention education Professional Development/Training Plan based on the CDC DASH Professional Development Practices.

  • Providing professional development events for teachers, school staff, and parents on topics including HIV-related policies and practices, and strategies for teaching the district HIV prevention lessons.

Conducting the Youth Risk Behavior Survey

  • Administering the YRBS to collect data on youth risk behaviors that are representative of San Diego students in grades 9–12.

  • Disseminating YRBS results to all district high schools, the Sex Education Advisory Council, and partner agencies.

  • Implementing an action plan in HIV prevention and revising the HIV prevention education curriculum based on YRBS data.
