Past Program Activities, 2003–2008
South Carolina, 2003–2008

From March 2003–February 2008, South Carolina received funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to promote coordinated school health, provide HIV prevention education, and conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS).

Past Program Activities

Promoted Coordinated School Health with an Emphasis on Physical Activity, Nutrition, and Tobacco Use Prevention (PANT)

  • Provided assistance to organizations that serve youth to enhance collaboration and strengthen their existing school health programs.
     
  • Provided professional development for training cadre members on available physical activity, nutrition, and tobacco use prevention curricula and resources.
     
  • Provided mini-grants to local school districts to develop coordinated school health programs with a focus on promoting physical activity, nutrition, and tobacco use prevention.

Provided HIV Prevention Education

  • Surveyed youth to identify perceived barriers to HIV prevention education.
     
  • Provided training and assistance  in HIV prevention to community organizations that focus on addressing the needs of African American youth.
     
  • Provided HIV prevention education training to new South Carolina teachers.

Conducted the Youth Risk Behavior Survey

  • Monitored critical health behaviors of youth within the state.
     
  • Shared the YRBS results with stakeholders throughout the state.
