Penn State Podcasting Initiative: Fall 2008 Pilot

Teaching and Learning with Technology (TLT) and Education Technology Services (ETS) is proud to announce the continuation of the Penn State Podcasting Initiative/Pilot for the Fall 2008.

Program Focus

Podcasting is a simple yet effective way to engage students in and out of the classroom. ETS is announcing a program to support the creation, management, and distribution of both audio and video podcasts for teaching and learning purposes. We are actively seeking instructors who are interested in creating podcasts to support their learning environments.

To get started with podcasting for your course, simply fill out the course request form and we will contact you to discuss your needs.

If you are interested in podcasting not related to a specific course (ex. for a department), please fill out the form at http://podcasts.psu.edu/showsetup.

Education Technology Services has established a program that offers assistance in the following three categories:

  1. General podcasting from an instructor to support and extend the classroom experience.
  2. Lecture-based podcasting that is designed to capture lectures and make them available for download.
  3. Activity-based podcasting that puts the students into the role of content creators.

Podcasting projects will be selected on an ongoing basis. It is the hope of ETS to provide assistance in the early stages of your podcasting efforts so that instructors can easily meet their goals going forward. Some examples from each of the three outlined categories could include:

  • Providing feedback to students via a weekly podcast. In this scenario, an instructor may wish to provide a weekly recap of the events from class and distribute it via a podcast. ETS would provide guidance as it relates to equipment selection, podcasting training, and distribution assistance.
  • Capturing one lecture a week for a traditional semester long course. In this scenario, an instructor may wish to create reusable versions of a weekly lecture so that they can be automatically delivered to members of the class. ETS would provide guidance as it relates to equipment selection, podcasting training, and distribution assistance.
  • Allowing students to create a weekly status review that can be podcasted to the instructor and other students. In this scenario, an instructor may wish to charge students with the task of providing a weekly status review in the form of an audio or video podcast. ETS would provide guidance as it relates to equipment selection, in class introduction to podcasting, training sessions at Studio 204, instructor training, and distribution assistance.

In addition to proposing projects to solve particular curricular challenges, teams of faculty may submit proposals to develop specialized podcasting approaches that solve larger issues.
